Hey, y'all. . .guess what I just found out is coming to Morgan City? An event called "The Battle in the Basin," an old-time boat race where the participants use outboard motors instead of hydroplanes. It's not like the races we used to watch sitting out on the seawall. This is the inaugural competition and it will take place this Saturday and Sunday at Russo's Landing. It's gonna be sponsored by the Deep South Racing Association and is officially two days of world championship outdoor drag racing.
Just to give you some kind of idea what to expect, racing participants range from Performance Bass and Ski to the 1/8th mile "Outlaws" with several classes in between. Their speed runs from the low 80-mph in the stock classes to in excess of 110 mph for the Pro Gas and Outlaw Teams.
Now there is a slight admission--$10 per person plus $10 per ice-chest, and a variety of food and non-alcoholic beverages will be sold at the site. I hear-tell from the organizers. . .this is the most competitive racing on water.
By the way, proceeds go to benefit the Morgan City Volunteer Fire Department. For details, call 985-851-7689.
